LAYLA - HER SUCCESS STORY
Layla is a 19 year-old trans woman from Egypt. Following years of suffering, child abuse and pretending to be someone else, Layla knew she had to leave her unsafe environment and live her truth. With the help of Trans Asylias, Layla was able to escape her home country, and find stable housing with other asylum seekers in Paris.
Over the next several months, Layla kept in touch with us through many late night calls, chats and emails. With the resources Trans Asylias could provide, Layla felt empowered to pursue her transition, and take French classes to adjust to the new environment. While the initial months in her new home felt isolating, Iman constantly supported Layla to find community in Paris. Within her first year, she was granted asylum and began applying to universities.
We are thrilled to announce Layla has studied hard and been accepted into Sorbonne Universite! She is now fluent in French, and is excited to work student jobs and meet new people.
Layla reflects: “I would just like to say thank you to everyone who supports Trans Asylias in any shape or form because without you I would have never been able to get here. I will never forget where I came from and I will never stop wanting to be a part of the movement which aims to make this world a better place.”
