LOREEN: HER SUCCESS STORY

Loreen walked from Syria to Turkey seeking asylum. Faced with no other choice as a young trans woman, she scaled the Turkish border wall in order to find safety.  She was quickly detained, and declared herself an asylum seeker to the police. Loreen was placed in a refugee camp, where the conditions were dangerous and transphobic, and she could not present herself as she wanted, for fear of assault or death.

Once she was granted UNHCR protection, Iman spent time with her to decide the safest country for Loreen to relocate. Loreen was very excited about the prospect of Canada. After one year, she was granted her humanitarian visa, and now lives safely in Canada.

Loreen is much happier now. Her goal now is to be fluent in English and pursue her transition.
